How western Wear has changed the culture in India

Lifestyle and trends are strongly influenced by social-cultural changes, such as modernization, technological innovation, and also by artistic movements. Trend analysis looks at the interaction of shifts in fashion, consumer lifestyle, and culture and is a framework for understanding and interpreting fashion changes.

‘Nothing is constant except for a change!’ Fashion is nothing but a constantly changing trend.

Great philosophers have come up with different definitions for fashion. But all of them hold one concept in common – looking and feeling good!

Indian Culture, which is one of the oldest & richest cultures, is now days posing a serious threat as western culture is establishing its strong base in India and slowly and gradually wiping the Indian culture. No doubt the western culture is versatile and has taught us to be self-independent but this does not mean that we will forget our culture at all and blindly follow it. Since India has the tradition to take good things from others but this does not mean that we will completely forget our values.

Indian fashion trends have been constantly changing due to several factors including diversity within the country, Islamic invasion, western colonialism, and foreign traders that have visited the country from time immemorial.

As mentioned at the outset, India is having scads of cultural diversities which has made Indians very open-minded. Various ethnic groups stay in one country learning about each other’s culture and language. Each ethnic group has a distinct style of dressing which becomes a new thing to try for the other. It makes Indians more experimental about their dresses. That’s why Indian fashion designers have gained the utmost dexterity and global fame in amalgamating various styles in attires.

Western wear is one of the fastest-growing categories in the retail industry that attracts consumers across demographics. Western wear is a clothing style derived from 19th century American old west region. It broadly comprises jeans, t-shirts, and jackets for men and women. Over the years, this category has diversified significantly providing consumers with a wide variety of fashion trends and products. With the definition of western wear becoming wider, it has embraced casual shirts, trousers, suits, skirts, dresses, etc. This category of clothes is widely accepted by many cultures, as they offer comfort, durability, and variety.

Earlier women in India were not supposed to do physical work, so if you will look closely you will see that the traditional clothes for women in India were not suitable for someone who is involved in some physical activity. So it’s not that easy for women to move freely in traditional wear. For instance – In Saree, a long cloth is wrapped around the body of a woman from waist to feet. This restricts the movement of the legs up to an extent. Therefore women find it uncomfortable. Moreover, clothes like Saree & Lehenga are, sometimes, very difficult to carry. It completely depends upon the work and weight of the clothes. For instance – Bridal lehengas are pretty much heavier than normal lehenga.

On the other hand, western clothes like jeans are much more comfortable for women maybe because they are designed this way. They provide much comfort to them as compared to Indian wear. Women can move freely in western wear.

CONCLUSION

In India, women have started adopting Western clothing on a huge scale. They wear jeans, trousers, shirts, t-shirts, dresses, and much more. Different people go for different outfits with multiple colors as per their preference. There is no doubt that western clothes make you look elegant.

As much as Western clothes are classy, Ethnic clothes have their grace. The traditional outfits can be worn for day-to-day activities and also for special occasions. The Ethnic clothing for women comprises salwar, kameez, sarees, lehenga, churidar, etc. In North India, women prefer salwar kameez, whereas, in South India, women usually wear Sarees. You can also find different fabrics for sarees such as cotton, silk, chiffon, georgette, and more to choose from. Lehenga and Shararas are mostly a perfect fit for weddings or other important events.  Both western clothing and ethnic wear are special in their way. While the majority of women prefer western clothing as they find them comfortable, some women find comfort in wearing Ethnic clothes. It will be unfair to say that one or the other is better. But in most cases, the clothing depends on the occasion. But one thing that western clothes cannot justify is the culture and tradition of our country.
